The African Paradiplomacy Network (APN) is pleased to note that Dr Ohiocheoya Omiunu, Co-Founder of the Network and Associate Professor of International Economic Law at the University of Kent, has been awarded a British Academy ODA Global Innovation Fellowship (2025–2026).
Hosted by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) in Johannesburg, where Dr Omiunu will be based for the duration of the fellowship, this appointment focuses on advancing research and policy engagement in climate finance and African Cities.
Dr Omiunu’s fellowship project examines how African subnational governments are using green bonds and other sustainable finance instruments to fund infrastructure and climate adaptation initiatives, and how these mechanisms intersect with Africa’s broader sovereign debt challenges. The project builds on his recent work with the African Sovereign Debt Justice Network (AfSDJN) and Afronomicslaw, both of which have produced influential research on debt, sustainability, and development policy.
As part of the fellowship, Dr Omiunu will collaborate closely with SAIIA’s Climate Finance and Governance Programme, convening policy dialogues, training workshops, and capacity-building initiatives aimed at supporting African cities and regions in designing equitable and resilient climate finance frameworks.
This award underscores the growing recognition of interdisciplinary research linking international economic law, sustainable finance, and subnational governance—themes central to APN’s mission to advance Africa-centred scholarship on international engagement and development.
