Subnational Foreign Relations in Africa: An Interdisciplinary Analysis of South Africa and Nigeria
By Ohiocheoya Omiunu, Fritz Nganje, and Ifeanychukwu Azuka Aniyie
(Forthcoming, Routledge Research in International Economic Law Series)
The African Paradiplomacy Network (APN) is delighted to announce the forthcoming publication of Subnational Foreign Relations in Africa: An Interdisciplinary Analysis of South Africa and Nigeria, co-authored by APN members Dr Ohiocheoya Omiunu (Co-Founder, APN), Dr Fritz Nganje (Co-Founder, APN), and Dr Ifeanychukwu Azuka Aniyie.
This landmark volume offers one of the first systematic analyses of how subnational governments in Africa engage in international relations. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives from international law, political science, and development studies, the book examines the evolving role of states and provinces in South Africa and Nigeria as they navigate opportunities and constraints within regional and global governance structures.
At its core, the book contributes to APN’s mission to advance Africa-centred scholarship on subnational international engagement—or paradiplomacy—by foregrounding the agency of African subnational actors in shaping development and diplomacy beyond the state.
This publication reinforces APN’s growing contribution to debates on city diplomacy, decentralised cooperation, and regional integration, and represents a major step in building an interdisciplinary body of work that connects African scholars and practitioners working at the intersections of governance, law, and international relations.
Stay tuned for further updates, including details of the official book launch and APN policy dialogue on the future of subnational foreign relations in Africa.
